WHAT MAKES A WATCH
A MASTER CHRONOMETER?

For any watchmaker, precision and accuracy are paramount. Watch enthusiasts and collectors alike seek timepieces that not only embody craftsmanship but also deliver precise timekeeping. This quest for accuracy has led to the creation of certification standards such as the Master Chronometer status.

But what exactly is Master Chronometer status, and how does a watch achieve it? Let’s delve into this prestigious certification and explore the rigorous criteria that a timepiece must meet to attain it.

The COSC

In 1973, the four Swiss watchmaking cantons of Bern, Geneva, Neuchâtel, Solothurn and Vaud worked alongside the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry to fashion an independent chronometer testing body known as the COSC.

The Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres was introduced to set the standard for chronometer rating of movements, but brands such as Tudor and Rolex were consistently able to better the standard attained by the COSC with their own in-house testing. Limited to testing movement over a period of 15 days across only five positions and three temperatures, there was clear room from improvement and, as such, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) stepped in and the Master Chronometer certification was born.

The Birth of The Master Chronometer

The Master Chronometer certification goes above and beyond the limitations of the COSC. Established by the METAS, the focal point for all measurement related issues since 2015, this certification is a far more rigorous and comprehensive testing process for mechanical watches; any watch looking to qualify for evaluation under the METAS must both qualify as Swiss Made AND have already been through COSC testing before being deemed worthy of the METAS tests.

What Are The Tests?

The testing not only focuses on accuracy of the timing but also a host of other physical tests to ensure their performance under various conditions, such as exposure to magnetic fields and water resistance. To earn Master Chronometer status, a watch must undergo a series of comprehensive tests and meet stringent criteria:

Accuracy Testing: The watch is tested for COSC-approved accuracy in six various positions and two alternating temperatures, ensuring that it maintains precise timekeeping under real-world conditions.
Magnetic Resistance: Watches are then exposed to strong magnetic fields (15,000 gauss) in two different positions before being demagnetized & checked against UTC. This ensures they remain accurate even when subjected to magnetic forces that can disrupt traditional mechanical movements. This test is carried out twice, first on just the movement of the watch and then the watch as a whole.
Water Resistance: Timepieces are tested for water resistance to their model specified depth ratings, which guarantee their performance in wet environments; for some watches, the METAS even exceeds this. If the watch does not meet it’s specified resistance, it does not pass.
Deviation of Chronometric Precision: The timepiece undergoes acoustic tests to ensure the watch stays accurate at any angle
Power Reserve: The watch’s power reserve is tested to verify that it meets or exceeds the manufacturer’s stated duration. As with the water resistance, if it does not meet it’s specified power reserve it does not pass.
Durability: Watches undergo extensive durability tests, including shock resistance and resistance to external forces.
Functionality: All functions of the watch, including chronograph, date, and time-setting, are tested to ensure they operate correctly in six different positions at both 100% and 33% of the power reserve, to ensure the watch’s accuracy even when not at full power.
