History of Cartier Watches

Cartier’s long and storied history means that they’ve created plenty of desirable watch models over the years. There’s sure to be something for any collector in their most popular and coveted models. Founded in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier in Paris, Cartier began as a luxury jewellery company, but it didn’t get into the watch business until 1904. From that point on, Cartier was known for its unique and sophisticated style. Even more impressive, Cartier was the first to popularise and mass-produce the wristwatch.

What Are the Most Popular Second-Hand Cartier Watches?

Santos

The Santos is where it all started for Cartier watches. Back in 1904, Cartier’s friend, a Brazilian pilot named Alberto Santos-Dumont, mentioned how the typical pocket watches were inconvenient while flying a plane. Cartier’s response was to design a timepiece that could be worn on your wrist, and thus was born the first wristwatch. The iconic vintage Cartier watch was created with a square case and bezel.

Panthère

First introduced in 1983, the Panthère was created to double as a piece of jewellery. This dazzling vintage Cartier was designed to mimic the sleekness of a panther and capture fierce femininity in one beautiful timepiece. The square bezel, flexible bracelet and free-spirited design remain iconic to this day. The Panthère continues to come out with unique designs as updated models are released.

Tank

Introduced in 1917, this was the second wrist watch designed by Louis Cartier. It’s said to be modelled after the Renault tanks from WWI. These watches come in a square or rectangular shape and a variety of model variations. The Tank is one of the most classic Cartier models available and hasn’t changed since its inception.

Ballon Bleu

Created in 2007, the Ballon Bleu was designed to smash the traditional design concept of what a watch could be. Everyone is familiar with round watches, but Cartier took it to the next level by adding volume to the familiar shape. A double convex design truly makes this watch stand out amongst the crowd and pop on the wrist.

Pasha

Introduced in 1985, the Pasha is an extremely popular watch from Cartier’s women’s line. The Pasha has a striking profile, with a rounded bezel and refined design. The Pasha continues to be updated as new models have come out over the years.

Baignoire

The Baignoire is another of Cartier’s most timeless pieces, and it was designed by Cartier himself in 1912. This watch was wholly unique, designed as an ellipse on a single line. The striking form of this watch makes it a beautiful, highly desirable watch that looks great on the wrist and truly catches the eye.

Calibre

One of the newer additions to Cartier’s catalogue, the Calibre de Cartier was designed as a men’s sports watch. The Calibre was innovative because it was the first in-house mechanical movement watch Cartier produced. This watch strikes a masculine profile and is a great addition to anyone’s Cartier collection.

Ronde

For those who want a truly traditional design from their timepiece, the Ronde is classic in both appearance and in function. The Ronde uses Roman numerals, blue hands, a winding mechanism and an alligator strap. The Ronde doesn’t break the mould; it just perfects it.

The Stand-Out Features of Fine Second-Hand Cartier Watches

Although the different models of Cartier watches are aesthetically diverse and unique, the core design principles perfected by Louis Cartier remain a thread that runs through every Cartier timepiece. With every watch, you can expect striking Roman numerals, a rail track on the dials known as Chemin de Fer, blue steel sword-shaped hands, a cabochon and crown on the winding mechanism, a guilloché dial and the Cartier signature.

Cartier watches also feature various different metals for you to choose from, such as gold and rose gold. and embellishments such as diamonds and sapphires on the crown.
