The distinctive red and blue bezel, known as the “Pepsi bezel,” became an enduring symbol of the GMT-Master’s functionality and style. Despite its luminous bakelite bezel insert being prone to cracking, Rolex swiftly replaced it with a more durable metal insert in 1956. Over its four-year production span, the ref. 6542 underwent improvements, including updates to its movement and enhancements in water resistance. Although succeeded by later models, the GMT-Master ref. 6542 remains a coveted collector’s item, revered for its pioneering role in aviation horology.
